This study explores ocean literacy and support for a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Recife do Algarve - Pedra do Valado. A survey was conducted with 262 participants of diverse backgrounds, including residents, national and international visitors, and international residents. The study aims to understand respondents' knowledge of the area, perception of the MPA, and develop effective communication strategies for MPA implementation. Results indicate varying ocean literacy levels, with residents showing higher knowledge, but overall, ocean literacy remains low. Ocean-related occupations positively impact ocean literacy, highlighting the importance of personal connections to the marine environment. Participants generally support the MPA, especially among national visitors and international residents. However, lack of knowledge about the area and the future MPA calls for improved communication and awareness-raising efforts. "Students and schools" were identified as a priority focus group for communication, followed by "Fisheries associations" and "Maritime-tourism associations or companies." Social media campaigns were deemed valuable for awareness-raising. The study emphasises the need to enhance ocean literacy, engage stakeholders, and adopt inclusive communication strategies to promote MPA support and sustainable marine conservation.
