Installations of floating macrophyte islands for nutrient removal and local water quality improvement in Baltic lagoons

The LiveLagoons project aims at improving the water quality in eutrophicated lagoons in the South Baltic by the use of innovative floating wetlands for nutrient removal. Within this EU-funded project, possible tasks of an intern could include:

  • Assisting field work:
    • Monitoring of water quality and maintenance work of floating macrophyte islands in the Darss-Zingst Bodden Chain
    • Assessments of pilot installations (macrophyte growth etc.)
  • Desk research:
    • Use of harvested biomass for energy (biogas, combustion), fodder or as construction material
  • Mapping activities:
    • Creating maps for potential installation sites for floating wetlands in German lagoons using ArcGis or QGis
  • Communication and dissemination of project results:
    • Assisting in the organization of local workshops or participation in fairs, conferences or excursions

EUCC-Germany offers its interns self-responsible, interesting work in a dedicated team and an insight view into the work of a non-governmental organization (NGO).

Language requirements:
• English • Basic German language skills are beneficial
Specific competences required :
• Student (m / f) with a focus on ecology and conservation, environmental management, spatial planning or another relevant field of study • Knowledge of nutrient cycles (P+N), water quality parameters, coastal hydrodynamics or emergent macrophytes are beneficial • Interest and basic understanding of environmental engineering options in coastal waters • Ability to work independently • Excellent communication and team skills
