Is fish stock status influenced by governance complexity in stock management?

The work is a desk study, examining the publicly available ICES fish stock advice sheets. The student will look at all stocks for which ICES produces advice based on an analytical assessment. The status of each stock is indicated in the stock advice sheets, in the form of traffic-light symbols (green for good, red for bad, orange for intermediate). Factors that represent complexity of governance can also be found in the stock advice sheets, such as: do management area and assessment area match, has the stock area (management or assessment) changed in recent years, are catches from other stock areas added to the stock, is there an agreed management plan, how many countries are sharing the TAC (total allowable catch), etc. The hypothesis to be tested is that some or all of these factors influence the status of the stocks. The work done will contribute to a scientific paper. The student will learn about ICES stock advice and problems in governance related to fisheries management. The acquired expertise is useful if the student aspires a career in fisheries management science / fisheries scientific advice.
