Parasite detection and quantification in intertidal species

The project will focus on identifying the range of parasites found in species from intertidal habitats around Galway Bay. Therefore, the work on this project will involve intertidal sampling for a wide range of species, including annelids, molluscs and crustaceans. Following sampling, these species will be brought back to the centre in order to identify their infection status, and record the parasites infecting them. The work will involve identification of parasites mainly using a stereoscope so interested students should enjoy general microscopy. It is anticipated that a database for these parasite species will be developed during the placement period and this work will contribute to several ongoing European and International research projects.
